Proposal: Mangrove Reforestation Project
Last year the YES club organized fundraising for the tree planting project in Khao Yai. This year, we plan to help reforest mangrove trees in Ban Klongklone, Samutsongkram.
“Mangrove forests are located in 23 coastal provinces in Thailand. These forests used to cover 368,000 ha in Thailand in 1961, but the area dropped to 240,000 ha by 2002. The major causes of the loss of mangrove forests are timber and charcoal industries, while some areas were converted for urbanization, agriculture, and aquaculture especially shrimp farms.” (http://projects.wri.org/adaptation-database/thailand-mangrove-reforestation-and-protection )
“Mangrove trees offer significant and unique habitat to birds, mammals, crustaceans, and fish populations through a complex marine food chain, creation of breeding habitat, and establishment of restrictive areas that offer protection for maturing offspring. Furthermore, mangroves contribute to improved water quality by filtering and assimilating pollutants, stabilizing bottom sediments, and protecting shorelines from erosion.” (http://www.siemens.co.th/portal/home/eng/Press/Picture/070901.asp)
The YES club will ask for sponsor and raise funds to pay for the bus fee and trip costs for the children. YES members and other students will be traveling to Samutsongkram Province to plant these trees, learn more about the local environment and stay overnight. Please refer to our detailed itinerary attached.
Date: November 21-22, 2009(Changed due to Ploenchit fair)
Project Duration: 2 days and 1 night
Goal Amount: 1 rai, about 400 trees
Price (open for changes depending on raised funds): ฿1000/member .This price includes food (lunch and dinner on first day, and breakfast and lunch on second day), lodging, trees to plant (5-10/person), and all activities.
Participants: Maximum of 20 students, 4 teachers, 1 Thai staff, 5 children from Non-Formal Learning Centre for Poor Children.
CAS
This activity will be part of DP CAS requirement to do a large planned project that involves Service and at least one other area: either Action or Creativity.
In order to fulfill the Service component of CAS we must “help those who cannot help themselves alone”. Therefore, we would like to invite 5-6 children from Thursday’s CAS activity (childcare service) to accompany us so that they too can plant mangroves and offer the children an opportunity to see other places apart from their own community. Thus, disseminate knowledge about the importance of preserving mangroves to others.
Communicating to CIS community
Announcements to the CIS community would be done via posting announcements on boards and short announcements during flag-line up.
Fundraising
We plan to raise funds during October to allow one month for changes in plan. To raise funds, the club would organize environmental-friendly food sales. For details, see fundraising section.
Supervising staff
We need 4 teachers and one Thai staff to supervise us during the trip. In addition we should take a first aid kit, in case of injury or illness.
Transportation:
Participants will be traveling with (company pending….) on a 30 seats bus with full airconditioning system.
Drivers are for zero alcohol consumption with our standard alcohol electronic detector. For safety concerns, two bus drivers will be provided for the trips that have distances of 400 kilometers OR greater.
Traveling Time: Approximately 2 hours
Lodging: Pu Yai Chong Homestay (ผู้ใหญ่ชง โฮมสเตย์)
The Homestay is a long wooden room that holds around 250 people, male and female separated. In case there are other people travelin32g to the same location during the same time, YES members traveling in this trip will be required to share the room with other people.
The Homestay is equipped with fans only, but it would be cold during night time. Sleeping bags and mosquito curtain will be provided.

Mangrove Planting Trip Activities plan:
- Duration of activity: 1 hour
- We will need:
- Fun clues for finding the treasure
- A large area for the activity
- Things to hide
The rules of the game:
Players will be split into 4 teams; every member of the team should participate in the event. The first clue will be given to the leader of each team; teams must compete with each other to find the other clue, the faster a team finds a clue, the higher the chance of them finding the treasure. Players are not allowed to destroy or hide the clues they find; they should put it back to the same position where they found it.
- Duration of activity: 30 minutes
- We will need:
- To design some bingo cards related to environment issues
- Loads of pencils
The rules of the game:
Players pick an environmental bingo sheet marked with unique sets of environmental terms and phrases from one of our hosts. All bingo sheets are unique but there could be more than one winner during a bingo game. One of the hosts will say a random phrase or term relating the environment, and whichever player that has one of the phrases/terms mentioned by the host can cross out those terms. Whoever gets the most terms crossed out will be the winner.
Example environment terms:
- Acid Rain
- Carbon Dioxide
- Deforestation
- Global warming
- Ecosystem
- Emissions
- Erosion
- Contaminant
- Fossil Fuels
- Green House Effect
- Halocarbons
- Nuclear Fission
- Ozone
- Troposphere
- Skit about environmental problems
Divide into groups to act out skits (meant to be funny) about possible scenarios that could occur if we continue harming the environment.
- Water from melted glaciers floods the earth. How are you surviving?
- The earth is too hot to live above ground. You have to live in a temperature-controlled beach ball. What is it like??
- There are no trees and no oxygen. You are the survivals. But the only way to survive is to breathe from a smelly oxygen mask. What does it look like?
